Welcome to this guestbook. In here are all the reactions I have had on this site since 1997.

If you use a proper browser this side text-box should at all times be visible and not scroll along with the rest of the page, which is handy since this is a place where you can post a quick comment.

I knew Hermann Broch's son fairly well. I am currently reading the English translation of Musil's Diaries. I wish I had asked Broch's son about his father's relation with Musil, before the son died (ca. 1995). Best wishes! Into the Millennium (the criminals)!

I had carried Die Virwirrungen des Zoeglings Toerless around with me since about 1973 and never read it. I couldn't sleep last night, got up, picked up Toerless and read it through until 6:00 a.m. That it was written in 1906 amazes me. It reminded me of myself, as a student in a boarding school military academy years ago. Thank you for creating this site.

Many thanks for your really great site. It was very enjoyable and interesting to read because of its visual design and its excellent content.

I always thought that there had to be place for Musil and his "Mann ohne Eigenschaften" on the internet but couldn't find one. I think his reflections on modernity and modern identity, his mixture of technical and philosophical reasoning do fit well into a medium like the internet.

And I think your site really did it the right way...

prachtig gecomponeerde page !

My awareness of Musil is new and is the consequence of a friend's enjoyment of The Man Without Qualities. I've only read Postumous Papers but have thoroughly enjoyed what I have read. Also ran across Moosbrugger in a collection of examples of "the existential" in literature. Looking forward to reading TMWQ.

Dear Sir,

I am the American editor of the Musil Diaries to be published next year by Basic Books here in New York City. I read your Web pages on Musil with pleasure and will recommend them to all my students at the City College of New York. We published in the magazine Fiction (of which I am the Editor-in-chief) selections from the Diaries in English through three issues, Volume 12, Numbers 2&3, Number 13, 1&2, and Volume 14, No. 1.

If you would like me to, I will send you a number of corrections for your English translations of the pages you are publishing. Two that I noted are, "faze" where you should have "phase" and the remark that Musil's sister (who died in childhood) arranged for his Diaries to be published. It must have been his wife, Martha.

Congratulations and please keep up the good work!

Hello --

Your comments:

I've been waiting a long time for a Musil site... Nice work! If you're taking votes... I think it would be appropriate to attach a prose piece from the "Posthumous Papers of a Living Author," e.g., something like what's translated as "Black Magic" (my favorite). If you'd like, I'll transcribe the English version. That piece alone articulates just about everything encompassed by what we now call "performance theory."

I wanted to say that your site is most welcome, well done and a bright, if lonely, resource. I've long admired Musil, since coming across Torless many years ago. Sadly, he is seldom read in the States - though we do have the full translation of Der Mann Ohne Eigenschaften, finally. I am currently reading MWQ in conjunction with Underworld, by Don DeLillo - there are interesting similarities of style, focus, the effort to draft something as yet shapeless into tangible presence. Well, enough. Thank you again! Regards, Malcolm Lawrence
